A few weeks back someone(s) cut through our back fence and stole my expensive boots, 48 bottles of Coke, and Roy's bike. Because of this we decided to get a guard dog. Pretty much everyone in Guatemala has a dog, or more correctly 10 dogs or more. Also, most Guatemalan's are afraid of dogs that are not their own. So we hope he will provide us some added security. It just might be a while.
Yesterday was an especially eventful day with our German Shepherd puppy Oso (bear in Spanish). In the morning we went for a run on an abandoned half-mile long road. He ran along behind us. I cut off up a big hill and I thought he would follow Areli below. Apparently he tried to follow me. When we realized he wasn't any longer on the road, we spent about a half-hour looking for him. We finally saw some long grass moving up on the hill and eventually found him. He's so short that he can't see where he is going nor can we see him when he gets off of the road.
Last night, he had a run-in with the cat, Jake. Jake has been "observing" him for the weeks that he has been here. Last night, while we were eating dinner, Oso was especially playful. He went running at Jake in a playful manner. Jake didn't like it so he gave him a left hook with claws. Oso was bleeding all over his neck and the floor. He was bleeding so much that I thought he was in big trouble. We even called someone to see if there was an emergency vet in Quiché. Thankfully, the bleeding stopped and we finally found that the source was the base of his right ear and not his neck. Areli and I decided to sew it up so hopefully his ear won't be crooked when he grows up. This was the first time I sewed up a dog.
